Just spitting it out
Sometimes the process of writing is more important than what you're writing
That's especially the case when you feel like you don't know what to write, when you feel stuck in the process, when you haven’t even moved past the most rudimentary of beginnings. When you don't even know the first word to put down.
At times like these, one of the most loving things you can do for yourself is just write something, anything down. And, I mean anything.
Write about what you wish you could say. Write about how frustrated you are, that you can't get your words in order to express what you want to express. Get the energy moving. Move out of your own way and let the momentum take you where it's going to take you.
Sit down at your computer and type out what you'd like to say even if it's just a sketch of what you'd like to say—an outline.
I find it much easier to process my thoughts verbally. I am, after all, a broadcaster first and foremost, so I often will speak my ideas. It works so much better for me that I finally decided to invest in an app that translates my recordings as I speak and then gives me the option of exporting the files in the audio format or in text format. And, voila! I have my thoughts written down and I'm no longer frustrated.
Feel around with this process. Muddle your way through it yourself and see what works best for you. Is it sketching an outline? is it voicing your frustrations and writing about what you wish you could say? Is it randomly writing down all of your ideas in a giant tumble and going back through and picking them out? Is it the way I work best and you would benefit from speaking your thoughts?
Try all of them, if necessary. And, when you start thinking it’s not worth the effort, remember that you’re worth the effort. I say with certainty it's better to go through this process than live with the regret of all you left unspoken.
